The Origin Story
Many of you will find this narrative all too familiar if you identify as a geek.
You were the outcast, the bullied, the one left behind. Maybe you were tiny, or wore thick humongous glasses at 4 years old.
Me? I was the "fat kid" with a pun-ny name that even teachers would make fun of.
Constantly.

Revealing Real-Life heroes
The Wondermama
Every Geek would dream about meeting a superhero in real life. Whether it be when you are surrounded by hoodlums, or trapped in a burning building, or even tied and left on the train tracks.
I had the privilege of meeting one today. Ms Zahnita Wilson is a mother of 3 who juggles work and motherhood simultaneously.
Seeing her run the business of slime making which is fueled by her daughter’s passion is a feat like no other.
With her guidance and support, her daughter began the business at 9 years old to fundraise her future college fees.
We salute you as a true real life superhero, Ms Zahnita!
The Superman
We often witness the greatness of a superhero’s undying resolve in saving their loved ones on the big screen or in beautiful illustrations of comic books.
I have had the immense honour of seeing the undying love of a man and his wife. A man whose undying resolve matches Superman himself.
Uncle Jason Ong and Aunty Kristine have been in love for many years with 2 wonderful children.
Eighteen years ago, tragedy befell the family when Aunty Kristine had been diagnosed with cancer. Since then, the family had been suffering mentally, emotionally and financially.
Even then, Uncle Jason’s undying love for Aunty Kristine and his children never allowed him to give up. He pushed on and provided for his family as best as he could, juggling daily chores and his work.
As time passed, multiple health complications arose within Aunty Kristine but Uncle Jason never once gave up. He carried her up the stairs and down as her legs failed her. He was there every step of the way encouraging her to fight on.
This year, Aunty Kristine passed away leaving behind her 2 children and beloved husband. In his last words to her, Uncle Jason mentioned this in his eulogy: “If I could do it all over again, I would have met you sooner so that I can love you longer..” We, from Geek in the Closet express our deepest condolences you and your family, Uncle Jason.
We are forever grateful for your love and care for Aunty Kristine.

My Martha
It began during the early days, surrounded by super villains. Jokers who would make fun of my weight and ‘pun-ny’ name, Mr Freezes who would intimidate me with their chilling presence, Poison Ivies who would stab me with thorny words.
During adulthood, while I was pursuing my career, it felt as though I was working for Lex Luthors and Kingpins. Death rays and shotgun shells in forms of demeaning remarks penetrate my skin on a daily basis.☄️ As darkness rises, surrendering felt like the only option. Then, when all hope seemed lost, a hero saved me.
My mother, Julie Chua, was always there showering her children with unconditional support. Support was shown when we decided to get out of the corporate life and start our own business. That gave birth to negativity from people around us. “HUH?! Why would you give up on Good Money?!” “Why would you sacrifice your career?!” “You are such a failure!” She acted as a shield from the psychological torment of constant belittling by friends and family alike.
Her words of encouragement, to me, was like the sunlight to Superman, empowering and rejuvenating at the same time. ️ Even when I was ridden with self doubt and the fear of failure, I will forever remember what she had mentioned to me. “Why do we fall, son? So that we can learn to pick ourselves back up again.” These words were the words that gave me courage to start Geek in the Closet. Thanks Mum. ️

The Promise
The birth of a superhero is often created with a promise. A promise to uphold justice, a commitment to bring change, a promise to make the world a better place, a commitment save people.
From the trauma of the death of his parents, Batman made a commitment to war on all criminals. With the power that Spider-Man received from a radioactive spider, he vowed to use it for good and to protect.Three years ago, a promise was made by Fareez to his wife, Hiba. The promise to never leave her side as she battles cancer. Even as she laid the cards down, his undying love did not waver. ️ “I would rather have a little with Hiba rather than a lifetime of what could have been.” He assumed the grueling position as a caregiver and provided support whenever, however he could as Hiba went through countless treatments.
As things looked sour, there was never a time when Fareez had a thought of going back on his promise.
With the love and dedication of her husband, Hiba had become stronger and had even continued working for the National Cancer Society Malaysia. A promise she is making to to create cancer awareness and to support caregivers in the country.
It is truly a great pleasure to have met you both and We, from Geek in the Closet salute you both to be true superheroes.
